Operational Planning Engineer

As a member of the Operational Planning team, you will be responsible for ensuring efficient management of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s resources in accordance with its mandate of providing reliable service while maintaining least cost operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Optimize the economic dispatch of Hydro’s hydroelectric and thermal generation assets in consideration of asset healthandmaintenance to minimize operating costs and thermal plant emissions,while maintaining system security within prescribed reliability criteria.
- Collaborate closely with the Newfoundland and Labrador System Operator, Energy MarketingandAsset Owners to optimize theproductionof Hydro’s assets.
- Quantify Labrador-Island Link energy requirements to maximize the value of Hydro’s generation, reservoir storage, and transmission interconnections, while ensuring the fulfillment of contractual commitments.
- Support the develop and management of the annual Generation Outage Schedule, incorporating short-term and long-term modeling to optimize resource availability, reduce costs, and minimize operational disruptions.
- Ensure transparency in how Hydro’s resources are managed, including documentation of established processes and procedures.
- Participate in the regulatory process as required including preparing reports, attending hearings and technical conferences and responding to requests for information.
- Take responsibility for your own personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and promoting the company’s Safety and Health Program.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What We’re Looking For:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster effective working relationships across various teams.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues, develop solutions, and make recommendations to management.
- Responsive to feedback, welcomes diversity, and enjoys working with a small team.
- Specific experience in analysis software (i.e. Excel, Python) would be an asset.
What You’ll Need:
- A university Degree in Engineering, or a diploma from an Engineering Technology program.
- Five years of experience is preferred, but not required.
- You must be eligible for membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) as either a professional member or engineer-in-training.
- Knowledge of the electric power sector or the energy sector in general is required. Computerized modelling experience would be an asset.
- Other education and experience may also be considered.
