Power System Application Engineer

Reporting to the Senior Manager, System Operations and Integration, the Power System Application Engineer will interact closely with Energy Control Centre staff to better understand power system control, monitoring and application functional requirements. Will work closely with the Operational Technology Team to ensure the Energy Management System (EMS) is well maintained and supported. Will direct technical field personnel when investigating problems or during testing and commissioning associated components or systems.

Responsibilities include:
­
  • Maintains SCADA and EMS applications in an operationally effective state while meeting the needs of users. Investigates and resolves SCADA and EMS application problems. Initiates modifications as necessary to maintain displays, databases and models.
  • Maintains EMS display and database standards and SCADA point standards. Works with Operational Technology Team to ensure changes comply with these standards.
  • Monitors key measurements used by SCADA and EMS applications to ensure operational integrity. Proactively identifies and promptly initiates corrective action as required.
  • Validates and maintains all information required to keep power system applications functioning optimally.
  • Identifies, supports the development, and assists with implementation of new functional requirements. Determines and analyses the needs of EMS users and recommends software changes that support operational requirements. Specifies associated requirements. Assists with development and implementation of these custom requirements. Assists with the design of test procedures, used to thoroughly validate functional changes. Prepares and maintains associated documentation.
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of SCADA and EMS application functions and recommends changes.
  • Maintains and adjusts power system models to ensure applications function to obtain optimal benefits and reflect the actual electrical power system. Software models include generating units, generation commitment and control, power network analysis and the operator training simulator. Ensures applications are well integrated to achieve optimal performance.
  • Performs assigned tasks for Services Environmental Management System (as required).
  • Models desired safety behaviors, integrates safety into every aspect of daily life, actively solves safety-related problems and makes improvements in the area of safety.
  • May be required to perform standby duties on a rotational basis.
­Qualifications:
Bachelor of Engineering, with specialization in electrical engineering, from an accredited university program.
Minimum four (4) years relevant experience in power system operation; applications used to monitor, analyze and control the power system; and power system modeling techniques and algorithms. Understands power systems, associated dynamics, and the needs of the power system operator. Experience with power system application algorithms. Experience with tuning models associated with power system analysis and control. Must be motivated with excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Must have excellent leadership qualities, written and oral communication skills, strong presentation, and organizational ability. Must have a high level of proficiency in the use of computing systems and software applications.
