Protection and Control Engineer

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is an employer of choice within the energy sector.­ The Engineering Services Division is focused on providing quality project management as well as engineering design services and support.­ The long term plan is to execute an ambitious capital program to replace and renew aging assets and to add new assets.
We currently have an opening in the Protection, Control & Communications (PCC) Engineering Department for a Protection and Control (P&C) Engineer with an emphasis on power system protection.­ Reporting to the Supervising Engineer – Protection, you will work as a member of a small team with both operational and project responsibilities.­ Your technical skills and experience, combined with excellent written and verbal skills, will allow you to make significant contributions in support of day to day operations as well as projects.

Responsibilities:
You will join a multi-discipline team working in a matrix organization to design, implement, and support modern P&C systems.­ This includes a very wide range of challenging technologies including different types of protective devices such as distribution reclosers, power fuses, different types of protective relays, and various control devices.­ Knowledge of hydro-electric plant operation, diesel plant systems, gas turbines, transmission protection and control, IED interfacing, and SCADA systems would be an asset. This position supports operations, as well as project execution activities including:
­
  • Provide technical engineering support for the operation and maintenance of all Hydro facilities
  • Prepare conceptual designs, feasibility studies, and estimates for a variety of system modifications or expansions
  • Conduct engineering studies and assessments for a variety of issues and prepare reports on same
  • Prepare P&C engineering design and equipment standards for use by Hydro
  • Assess new technologies and determine the optimal solution
  • Select and procure P&C equipment
  • Prepare settings for protective relays used in generation facilities (hydro, thermal, gas turbine, and diesel), terminal stations, transmission lines, and distribution systems
  • Prepare detailed design drawings for a wide variety of utility generation, transmission and distribution systems
  • Prepare contract documents and technical specifications for a wide variety of projects, evaluate the tenders, and make recommendations to award
  • Review manufacturers’ and/or consultants’ drawings to verify conformity with design criteria and Hydro's standards and operating philosophies
  • Monitor progress of equipment manufacture, do inspections and participate in factory testing of the equipment
  • Review test reports to ensure compliance with schedules and technical and commercial requirements
  • Direct activities of external consultants to ensure services are delivered according to contract requirements
  • On-site supervision and support during­ installation and commissioning
  • Prepare and/or review As Built drawings and operating and maintenance manuals
  • Interface with other discipline engineers and operations staff on a diverse array of projects

Job Requirements:
­
  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Electrical)­ with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in P&C, preferably with an electric utility
  • Eligibility for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL)
  • Relevant experience in the design, implementation, and troubleshooting of P&C equipment and systems, preferably for electric utility installations
  • A working knowledge of SCADA, TCP/IP, protection protocols, and related test equipment
  • Experience with protective relay coordination software, such as Aspen OneLiner, would be considered an asset
  • Experience in preparing specifications, drawings, and wiring diagrams
  • Experience in supervising equipment installation and commissioning
  • Experience in selecting, configuring, and troubleshooting P&C equipment
  • Experience in preparing project estimates
  • Effective written and verbal skills
  • Ability to work with and/or lead a multi-discipline team of both internal and external resources
  • Demonstrated experience within a team environment
  • Travel to Hydro sites is required
