Electrical Engineer

NL Hydro is offering a challenging and exciting opportunity to join our team. Working in a creative, fast-paced environment, you’ll be part of transforming the future of the province’s energy sector.­ Our long term Asset Management Plan includes an ambitious capital program to rebuild, renew and replace portions of our installed asset base.

We currently have an opening in the Project Execution Department for an Electrical Engineer.
­
As the successful candidate, you will bring experience in project execution and contribute fully to the project outcomes. You work equally well as a technical member of the team or guiding other members. Your technical skills and experience combined with excellent communication skills will allow you to make significant contributions to the project deliverables. You will prepare Capital Budget Proposals and Work Orders with justification and cash flows and research these proposals for more optimum designs and applications. At certain times, you will be expected to prepare contract documents and technical specifications for a wide variety of projects, evaluate tenders, prepare evaluation reports and recommend award. You will also monitor project progress through all phases to ensure compliance with schedules, technical and commercial specifications.

Responsibilities:
You will join a multi-discipline team working in a project delivery environment responsible to design and execute projects. This position supports technical and project execution activities including:

  • Safety first - pro-actively participates in a vibrant safety culture, taking the lead in ensuring their safety and the safety of others;
  • Preparation of project proposals (capital & operating);
  • Tender preparation and bid evaluations;
  • Project management from initiation through design, construction, commissioning and closeout;
  • Contract management and change management;
  • Provide onsite support during construction and commissioning;
  • Assessment of new technologies to determine the optimum solution for electrical problems;
  • Regular travel to the Churchill Falls and Menihek hydro generation stations;
  • Projects relating to other NL Hydro assets may also be required in the future, depending upon operational needs.

Job Requirements:
You will need to bring the following:

­
  • Graduation from a recognized university with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree;
  • Minimum 5 years relevant project experience with preference­ in the electric utility industry;
  • Membership in the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) association;
  • Proven communication, teamwork and leadership skills;
  • Must possess and maintain an appropriate valid driver’s license;
  • Willingness to travel to site locations as required;
  • Project management experience or certification will be considered an asset;
  • Experience working with MS Office.

Mandatory Vaccination Policy

On October 15, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced the details of the mandatory vaccination policy that applies to public service employees including those in Crown Corporations such as NL Hydro.

Under the new policy, all provincial government employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, or have an approved medical exemption by December 17, 2021. A person is considered fully vaccinated when two weeks has passed since their second vaccination (or first in the case of one-dose vaccines).

Failing to comply with this requirement (including requested but not approved policy exemption) will result in the job offer being revoked.
